Intro

"How to Foster Innovation", an exclusive high-level round table, was held on March 20, 2014, at UBS Centers’ headquarters. A small circle of key policymakers and leaders from industry and academia took the opportunity to discuss key insights on how to enhance innovation and exchanged views on topics like institutions, economic policies, and incentive structures.

The main speakers from the different sectors took the stage in turn:

    Dr. Eric Scheidegger, Head of the Economic Policy Directorate and SECO Deputy Director

The speeches were followed by an open discussion among the participants, moderated by Prof. Fabrizio Zilibotti, Scientific Director of the UBS International Center of Economics in Society.

Prof. Philippe Aghion

Prof. Philippe Aghion is Centennial Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics and Fellow of The Econometric Society and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is one of the most prolific and influential economists of his generation. His main research is on economic growth and the theory of contracts and organizations. With Peter Howitt, he developed the so-called Schumpeterian Growth Paradigm, and extended the paradigm in several directions; much of the resulting work is summarized in his joint book with Howitt entitled "Endogenous Growth Theory".

Dr. Eric Scheidegger

Dr. Eric Scheidegger has been Head of the Economic Policy Directorate since February 2012 and SECO Deputy Director since February 2007. He was economic policy consultant to the former Minister of Economic Affairs, Federal Councillor Pascal Couchepin, from 1998 to 2002 and member of the NZZ economic editorial staff and correspondent for economy from 1994 to 1998. He also played an active part in the "Gesellschaft zur Förderung der schweizerischen Wirtschaft" (association for the development of the Swiss economy, now called economiesuisse) from 1992 to 1994.

Patrick Warnking

Patrick Warnking has been Country Director Google Switzerland since January 2011. From 2007 to 2011 Patrick was Google Industry Leader in Germany for the industries Local, Media & Entertainment and Public. Prior to Google he led sales teams for entertainment and digital advertising sales of ProSiebenSat Media. His roles included Head of Sales, Director Sales and Commercial Director. Patrick Warnking studied economics at the University of Saarbrücken and holds an MBA at Steinbeis University Berlin / Bocconi University of Milan / Stern University in New York City.
