Human capital as major economic factor
The success of companies is strongly linked to the personal know-how of their employees. On a macroeconomic level, the wealth of nations greatly depends on investment in human capital. For Switzerland with few natural resources, the many positive effects of strong human capital are particularly important. But what kind of human capital does Switzerland need? Where do we face shortages and where oversupply? Based on these insights, what type of education system would be best suited to produce such human capital? How is our human capital best deployed to maximize economic welfare in our country? Experts from science, business, and politics discussed these and more questions at the UBS Center’s annual Podium, which took place in Zurich on June 23, 2015.

Dr. Mauro Dell'Ambrogio
Mauro Dell'Ambrogio was from 2013 to 2018 State Secretary for Education Research and Innovation in the new Department of Economics, Education and Research WBF (formerly EVD). Prior to that, he took service in public functions in the canton of Ticino, such as Project Manager for the establishment of Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and General Secretary of the USI.

Monika Bütler is an economicst. She was full Professor of Economics at the University of St.Gallen (HSG). Her research areas are social security, job market, political economics and information economics. Besides her international research activity, she frequently participates in the public debate on economic and political issues. She is co-founder and pub-lisher of the blog „batz.ch“, a forum for Swiss economic policy. Monika Bütler is a member of the Board of Directors of Schindler Holding AG and Huber & Suhner AG, a member of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank as well as Vice President of the Foundation Board of the Gebert Rüf Foundation.
Christian Dustmann ist Professor für Volkswirtschaftslehre am University College London. Zudem ist er Direktor des Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (CReAM) und Präsident der European Association of Labour Economists (EALE). Dustmann ist Research Fellow am Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) und Research Associate am Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Arbeitsökonomie (Lohnstrukturen, Einkommensmobilität), Migration und Bildungsökonomie. Seit Jahren berät Dustmann die britischen Regierungsinstitutionen zu Migrations- und Bildungsthemen.
Walter Leimgruber ist Ordinarius und Leiter des Seminars für Kulturwissenschaft und Europäische Ethnologie an der Universität Basel. Zudem ist er Präsident der Eidgenössischen Kommission für Migrationsfragen, gewählt vom Bundesrat für eine Amtsperiode von 2012 bis 2015. Zu den Forschungsschwerpunkten von Walter Leimgruber gehören Migration, gesellschaftliche Mechanismen der Integration und Ausgrenzung, Kulturkonzepte und Kulturpolitik, visuelle Anthropologie, materielle Kultur und Museologie.
Gerhard Pfister, Dr. phil., ist CVP-Nationalrat, Delegierter des Verwaltungsrats der Institut Montana Zugerberg AG und Präsident des Verwaltungsrats der Tagesschule Elementa AG, Neuheim ZG. Von Dezember 1998 bis November 2003 wirkte er als Kantonsrat und von April 1999 bis April 2008 als Präsident der CVP des Kantons Zug. Gerhard Pfister war zudem Schulleiter und Lehrer, mit Unterrichtstätigkeit in Philosophie und Deutsch von 1984 bis 2013.
Rudolf Strahm ist Ökonom, Chemiker und Publizist. Jahrelang war er Zentralsekretär der SP Schweiz und für diese 13 Jahre lang im Nationalrat, er war Geschäftsführer der "Naturfreunde Schweiz" und Präsident des Mieterverbandes. Vom 1. August 2004 bis 31. August 2008 wirkte er als Eidgenössischer Preisüberwacher. Er hat über ein Dutzend Bücher zu Wirtschaftsfragen verfasst. Sein neustes Buch zur Bildungslandschaft Schweiz trägt den Titel "Die Akademisierungsfalle".

Valentin Vogt ist seit Juli 2011 Präsident des Schweizerischen Arbeitgeberverbands. Zudem ist er Präsident des Verwaltungsrates und Miteigentümer der Burckhardt Compression Holding AG.
