Intro

The UBS Center invited leading economists from around the world, as well as key economic decision-makers and interested members of the public, to participate in the inaugural Forum for Economic Dialogue. The 2012 edition of the Forum for Economic Dialogue addressed the future of the international financial system and focused on the interconnections between currency, banking, and debt crises.

The opening lecture was held by Jean-Claude Trichet, Chairman of the G30 and former President of the European Central Bank.

The day program contained three main sessions:

  • Financial Crisis, International Capital Flows and Investment Strategies in Uncertain Times
  • Monetary Policy and Currency Markets in a Volatile World
  • Is Switzerland Still a Safe Harbor in Turbulent Times?

To conclude the conference, Professor Daron Acemoğlu from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) delivered the first "Zurich Lecture of Economics in Society."

Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Prof. Daron Acemoğlu

Daron Acemoğlu is Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the Economic Growth Program of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research.
His research covers a wide range of areas within economics, including political economy, economic development and growth, human capital theory, growth theory, innovation, search theory, network economics and learning.
In the book "Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty" Daron Acemoğlu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or the lack of it).

Prof. Philippe Bacchetta

Philippe Bacchetta is Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Lausanne and President of the Swiss Society of Economics and Statistics. His research interests include international finance, financial crises, and monetary economics.

Prof. Markus Brunnermeier

Markus K. Brunnermeier is the Edwards S. Sanford Professor of Economics at Princeton University. He is a faculty member of the Department of Economics and affiliated with Princeton's Bendheim Center for Finance and the International Economics Section. He is the director of Princeton's Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance.
His research focuses on financial markets and the macroeconomy with special emphasis on bubbles, liquidity, financial stability and its implication for financial regulation and monetary policy.

Prof. Jean-Pierre Danthine

Jean-Pierre Danthine is Vice-Chairman of the Swiss National Bank Governing Board and thereby also Head of Department II (Financial Stability, Cash, Finance and Risk).
From 1980 to 2009, Jean-Pierre Danthine was Professor of macroeconomics and finance at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.
His areas of expertise are macro and finance, with special focus on the business cycle and asset pricing implications of market frictions.

Ernst Fehr promovierte 1986 an der Universität Wien. Seine Arbeit hat gezeigt, wie soziale Motive die Zusammenarbeit, Verhandlungen und Koordination zwischen Akteuren beeinflussen und wie sich dies auf das Funktionieren von Anreizen, Märkten und Organisationen auswirkt. Seine Arbeit identifiziert wichtige Bedingungen, unter denen die Zusammenarbeit floriert und zusammenbricht. Die Arbeit an den psychologischen Grundlagen von Anreizen informiert uns über die Vorzüge und Grenzen finanzieller Anreize für die Vergütung von Mitarbeitern. In anderen Arbeiten hat er die Bedeutung der Unternehmenskultur für die Leistung von Unternehmen gezeigt. Alexander S. Friedman is the Global Chief Investment Officer of UBS Wealth Management and UBS Wealth Management Americas and is the Chair of the UBS Global Investment Committee. In this capacity, Friedman oversees the investment policy and strategy for approximately $1.6 trillion in assets.
Friedman is the former Chief Financial Officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a member of the foundation's management committee. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Prof. Jordi Galí

Jordi Galí is currently a senior researcher at the Center for Research in International Economics (CREI), a Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a Research Professor at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics. From 1999-2017 he was the Director of CREI. He was also the President of the European Economic Association in 2012. His research interests include macroeconomic theory and monetary policy.

Jean-Claude Trichet

Jean-Claude Trichet is Chairman of the Group of Thirty and former President of the European Central Bank. Before being appointed President of the ECB, he held several key positions in the finance department of the French government. 1987 he became Director of the Treasury Department of France and in 1993 he was appointed Governor of Banque de France. In these positions he was very involved in the work leading up to the establishment of the Eurosystem and the implementation of the European Central Bank System in 1999.
Jean-Claude Trichet was elected Chairman of the Group of Ten (G10) Governors on June 29, 2003. He was appointed President of the European Central Bank on October 16, 2003. He held the position as President of the European Central Bank from 2003 to 2011.
In 2008, Trichet won the Vision for Europe Award for his contributions toward greater European integrafirs

Kaspar Villiger, geboren 1941, erlangte 1966 das Diplom als Maschineningenieur an der ETH Zürich. Danach leitete er 23 Jahre lang als Chairman und CEO die Villiger Söhne AG, Stammhaus der in der Schweiz und Deutschland tätigen Villiger Gruppe. Von 2004 bis 2009 war er Verwaltungsrat für Nestlé, Swiss Re und die Neue Zürcher Zeitung und von 2009 bis 2012 Chairman der UBS AG. Seine Politlaufbahn startete er 1972 zunächst als Grossrat, anschliessend als Nationalrat und schliesslich als Ständerat. Im Bundesrat war Villiger von 1989 bis 2003, leitete erst das Militärdepartement und später das Finanzdepartement. 1995 und 2002 war er Bundespräsident. Villiger erhielt für sein Wirken zahlreiche Auszeichnungen; den Fischhof-Preis, die Ehrendoktorwürde der Universität Luzern, den Freiheitspreis der Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung und jüngst den Bonny-Preis für die Freiheit. Er ist Member of the Global Leadership Foundation (GLF) und seit 2012 Chairman der UBS Foundation of Economics in Society.

Fabrizio Zilibotti is the Tuntex Professor of International and Development Economics at Yale University. He is the President of the European Economic Association and co-editor at Econometrica.
