Intro

"The Future of Europe’s Banking Sector", an exclusive high-level round table, was held on January 7, 2013, in the Widder Hotel. A small circle of key policymakers and leaders from industry and academia took the opportunity to discuss and debate about the EU banking sector.

The roundtable offered three main speeches:

  • Keynote Address: The Future of Europe’s Banking Sector
    Erkki Liikanen, Governor of the Bank of Finland and Chair of the EU’s high-level Expert Group on structural reform of the EU banking sector (known as the "Liikanen Group")
  • Academic Viewpoint
    Sir John Vickers, Warden of All Souls College, Oxford University, and former Chair of the UK’s Independent Commission on Banking (ICB)
  • Industry Viewpoint
    Axel Weber, Chairman of UBS

The speeches were followed by an open discussion among the participants, moderated by Prof. Fabrizio Zilibotti, Academic Director of the UBS International Center of Economics in Society.

Governor of the Bank of Finland and Chair of the EU's high-level Expert Group on structural reform of the EU banking sector
Erkki Liikanen

Since 2004, Erkki Liikanen has been Governor of the Bank of Finland, member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank as well as Governor of the International Monetary Fund for Finland. Between 1995 and 2004, he was a member of the European Commission.
In February 2012, Erkki Liikanen also became the Chairman of the European Commission's high-level Expert Group on structural reform of the EU banking sector (known as the "Liikanen Group"). The Group's mandate was to determine whether, in addition to ongoing regulatory reforms, structural reforms of EU banks would strengthen financial stability and improve efficiency and consumer protection, and, if that is the case, to make proposals as appropriate. The Group presented its final report (the "Liikanen Report") to the Commission in October 2012.

Sir John Vickers

Sir John Vickers was Drummond Professor of Political Economy at Oxford University from 1991 to 2008, when he became Warden of All Souls College, Oxford University. From 1998 to 2000 he was Chief Economist at the Bank of England and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, and he was knighted in 2005.
In 2010, Sir John became Chair of the UK‘s newly created Independent Commission on Banking (ICB), whose task was to consider structural and related non-structural reforms to the UK banking sector to promote financial stability and competition. The commission made its recommendations to the UK government in September 2011, and the reforms are to be implemented by 2019.

"Axel Weber ist seit Mai 2012 Verwaltungsratspräsident der UBS. Von 2004 bis 2011 war er Präsident der Deutschen Bundesbank. Während dieser Zeit bekleidete er ausserdem die folgenden Positionen: Mitglied des Rates der Europäischen Zentralbank, Verwaltungsratsmitglied der Bank für Internationalen Zahlungsausgleich, Gouverneur des Internationalen Währungsfonds für Deutschland, sowie Mitglied der G7- und G20-Minister und -Gouverneure. Von 2010 bis 2011 war Weber Mitglied im Forum für Finanzstabilität und 2011 im Steering Committee des Europäischen Ausschusses für Systemrisiken. Er ist Verwaltungsratsmitglied des International Institute of Finance und Mitglied der Group of Thirty."
